Gallery of Sample Immigration Documents
Click on a document image to learn more about its validity for employment eligibilty verification and other purposes.
The selection of documents in the gallery is not the full range of documents that can be encountered as offered proof of employment eligibility,
but they are ones that are commonly encountered in practice. For a more complete range and discussion of such documents,
please consult the official
M-24 Handbook, which was revised in late 2007.
Beginning December 26, 2007, a revised form I-9 modified the list of acceptable documents. It can be downloaded
here.
Prior editions of the form I-9 are no longer acceptable. Employers should use only the current I-9 form and the list of documents attached to it.
List A documents satisfy both identity and employment eligibility in a single document;
List B documents establish identity, and List C documents establish employment eligibility.
As under earlier I-9 practice, a new hire must present either one
eligible List A document or a combination of one List B and one List C document. An employer must respect the employee's choice and
is not legally allowed to require an employee to furnish additional documentation if the documents selected by the employee satisfy the
acceptable categories, reasonably appear to
be valid on their face and relate to the employee.
Additional changes to the Form I-9 and M-24 are expected in 2009.
