Immigration Factoids ™
Every year a limited number of new immigrant visas is generated, but demand generally outstrips supply. Backlogs in some categories can last for decades. The State Department's monthly Visa Bulletin is useful to estimate remaining time periods. But spouses and other immediate relatives of U.S. Citizens can get immigrant visas immediately, without a wait.

Messing Law Offices: Immigration and Naturalization Services

Welcome to Messing Law Offices

Immigration law is extremely technical and changes quickly. I do not believe that it should be practiced by a lawyer occasionally, or in conjunction with something else. To be able to stay focused and keep current, I limit my legal practice to immigration law.

I am here to serve in whatever way I can. Past clients know this, and have written testimonials about it and the quality of legal work we do. Most potential clients "don't know what they don't know" when they first contact us. Immigration law is very complicated and the Government websites may not explain matters in a simple, straightforward way, but I can usually tell on the phone in a few minutes if I can help someone in some way. If not, there is no point going any further.

If I don't think I can help, I will tell you why as briefly as possible, and direct you to other possible resources as appropriate, including some helpful computer programs on our website that can be accessed for free.

If I think that there may be something to be accomplished in a case, I will invite a person making an inquiry to an initial appointment to discuss it along with whatever paperwork exists or can be obtained readily.

There is a charge of $200 for the appointment, which creates a credit against future fees so it will not be wasted. At the appointment, I orient a potential client using a direct, no-nonsense approach. I give an honest assessment about the chances of success, anticipated time frames, costs, and special problems, regardless of nationality, language, ethnicity, past mistakes, walk of life, or level of education.

If you are not confident discussing important matters in English, I can conduct consultations in French and Spanish effectively.

Each initial consultation is conducted in a confidential attorney-client setting. I look at the case from different angles to find the best approach in terms of chances of success, time to obtain the benefit, hassle and expense.

If I take a case, the client's problem becomes my own. I feel a sense of duty strongly. In most circumstances, we work on a fixed fee basis only, without hourly rate. This has been much appreciated by clients, who want to know what the process will cost without surprises. Installment plans are also available upon request.

The scope of services includes a variety immigration and naturalization matters, including family, work, prospective employment, and investment. Good advice in these areas can help avoid expense, inconvenience, heartache, and irrevocably lost opportunities.

We also advise clients on the immigration consequences of plea bargains as non-US citizen defendants.

Arizona has adopted its own immigration law, effective July 29, 2010. Parts of the law were temporarily enjoined by a Phoenix U.S. District Court judge, and the ruling was appealed and affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The case is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, which will decide whether to uphold all or parts of the injunction. The decision not only will affect persons who live in Arizona, but also potentially absentee property owners and travellers passing through the state, as well as other state laws that attempt to regulate immigration. As a licensed Arizona lawyer whose expertise has been sought in media analyses of immigration laws, I can give guidance, advice, court assistance, and legal representation in the event of an arrest or detention.
